M: I have many presents. I can run fast, I can read, and I can play soccer really good.
Me: I see. It sounds like you have many gifts.

Me: *turns to a page with a muskox* How is this picture different from the others we've seen so far?
M: Oh, I dunno, maybe it's that it's brown and all the other animals have been white and blend in with the snow?!
Me: Yes. Thank you for that completely correct and sarcastic answer.
Sort of felt like I was back in fourth grade for a minute there! Right up until the MLK assembly during which L decided to sit with his head resting on me.

I went to Chucky Cheese Its. -E
C: The past means it already happened and the present means it's happening now.
Me: That's a great definition! Class, did you know that another word for "now" is "the present?" Isn't that strange? When I hear "present" I think of gifts.
M: Maybe that's because today is a gift!
I know, this one is cliche. But this conversation actually happened, in my classroom, on 12/12/14. Awesome feeling to be right there for it and not just see it on TV!

(Giving a test) Me: Remember to underline the diagraphs.
L: There aren't any.
Me: Yes, there are.
L: No there's not.
Me: Yeah, okay, there's not.
*B makes eye contact with me*
Me (mouths the words silently) Yes, there are.
B (mouths the words silently back) I know.

First week of school:
L: I love Jitter Juice so much I'm saving it for later!
*I look at his desk and don't see a cup*
Me: Um...where are you saving it?
*L opens his desk to reveal his cup of juice.
